BRUSSELS, November 3. /TASS/. The European Union may begin serious discussions on a mandate for talks with Russia and the choice of a negotiator once the US congressional elections’ impact on the balance of power and the administration’s response become clear, a diplomatic source in Brussels told TASS.
"The question of a negotiator for talks with Russia and a mandate for those talks may arise in Europe once the new balance of power in the US following the congressional elections and the [US President Donald] Trump administration’s response to the results become clear," the source said.
He stressed that the EU hopes the US might "once again join in exerting coercive pressure on Russia" after the elections. In that case, the question of an EU negotiator "would lose its relevance."
"There have been no consultations in recent months on a European negotiator for talks with Russia on Ukraine," he added. EU countries have "no consensus on whether talks with Russia are advisable," the source concluded.
