WASHINGTON, April 2. /TASS/. The US Senate will not support an attempt to withdraw the country from NATO if President Donald Trump decides to make such a move, minority leader Chuck Schumer (a Democrat representing New York) said.
"I can promise this: the Senate will not vote to leave NATO and abandon our allies <…>," the senator wrote on his X page. "Thank you to [US Secretary of State Marco] Rubio for sponsoring the bill in 2023 requiring a two-thirds vote of the Senate" to ensure that presidents cannot act as they please on this matter, Schumer added.
He was referring to an initiative that would prohibit US leaders from withdrawing the country from NATO without congressional approval. In December 2023, the bill became law after passing the House of Representatives and the Senate and being signed by then-President Joe Biden.
Earlier, all EU countries refused to participate in military operations alongside the US against Iran. In response, Trump called European allies cowards and promised to "remember this." He also criticized NATO, calling the alliance a "paper tiger."
Then, in an April 1 interview with Reuters, the US leader stated that he is disgusted with NATO and is considering the possibility of withdrawing the US from the alliance. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Trump said he is considering the possibility of the US withdrawing from the alliance. In a conversation with The Daily Telegraph, Trump explained that he is considering revising US participation in NATO because the alliance did not support Washington in the war with Iran.
