NEW YORK, October 13. /TASS/. Confusion between prison officials and emergency responders delayed medical assistance for Christa Pike after she survived an attempted execution, the Associated Press reported.
According to AP, the first 911 call came about an hour after the lethal injection procedure began. Another half-hour passed before prison officials confirmed that the request for emergency assistance was genuine and allowed responders through the gates.
On September 30, Pike survived two doses of the lethal injection drug at a prison in Nashville, Tennessee. Her lawyers had previously warned that she had thrombocytosis and that administering the drug could cause blood clots and additional suffering.
Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Following the failed attempt, Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation and halted another execution scheduled for 2026.
