Fishing harbors on Hainan to participate in the collection of plastic waste in the ocean

SANYA, February 15. /TASS/. Fishing vessels on Hainan will collect household plastic waste in the ocean and deliver it to the harbor, reported by the Sanya Daily.

The first participants in this program on Hainan were the Yazhou Fishing Port and the Yufeng Professional Fishing Cooperative, both located in Sanya. The crews of the vessels in the process of fishing will collect plastic waste caught in the nets and deliver them to the harbor, following that the garbage will be sent for further disposal.

The province's fishing harbors will participate in ocean conservation efforts led by the Regional Agriculture and Rural Authority and supported by the Redefining Plastic - A Waste Economy Solution for Marine Litter project. This project of the EU and a number of countries in East and Southeast Asia is aimed at reducing pollution in the seas and oceans, in particular, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan are taking part in it.

Hainan has been actively seeking to reduce the use of plastic in the region in recent years. Earlier, the State Development and Reform Committee together with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China decided to gradually limit the use of plastic on Hainan in 2020, 2022 and 2025. Since December 1, 2020, the island has banned non-biodegradable bags, trash bags, cutlery and other household items. By the end of 2025, the province will completely ban the production, sale and use of all plastic products on the list approved by the Chinese government, including agricultural mulch film.

The provincial government pays special attention to environmental protection and pollution control. Fourbig cities on the island - Haikou, Sanya, Sansha and Danzhou - have introduced mandatory sorting of household waste since October. This year, the provincial authorities also intend to take a number of measures to protect the environment. Among them are the construction of four waste incineration power plants, the creation of marine stations for environmental monitoring of water conditions, control over carbon dioxide emissions by road transport, the fight against the use of firecrackers and fireworks, as well as the pollution of rivers and lakes in cities and towns.
