NEW DELHI, November 5. /TASS/. The results of the US midterm elections could prompt President Donald Trump to intensify efforts to reach foreign policy agreements, including a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, Robinder Sachdev, president of the New Delhi-based think tank Imagindia Institute, has told TASS.
"Trump now has more reason to seek a foreign-policy success, and next week’s Abu Dhabi talks offer one," the expert said, commenting on the US midterm elections.
According to Sachdev, there will be more opportunities to reach an agreement on Ukraine before January 2027, when the new Congress begins its term.
"Trump can offer more, but guarantee less. A deal struck before January will be easier than one struck after," he believes.
Furthermore, Sachdev noted that any long-term easing of sanctions against Russia would be constrained by the stance of Congress.
"Lasting relief from US sanctions needs Congress, and going by the Democratic leadership’s stated positions, the new Congress will scrutinize any concessions to Moscow and press for stronger support for Ukraine," the analyst pointed out.
Midterm elections were held in the United States on November 3. Americans voted for 35 out of 100 senators and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. Gubernatorial elections also took place in 36 states. According to the latest estimates from US media, Democrats are set to secure a majority in both houses. Currently, the Republicans hold the majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
