KRASNOYARSK, September 23. /TASS/. The number of people killed by bear attacks in Russia in recent months has risen to 17. Such attacks have occurred in the Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts, according to TASS estimates.
The highest death toll was recorded in the Krasnoyarsk Region in Siberia, where six people have died in bear attacks. Three people have been killed in each of the Tomsk and Irkutsk Regions, while two deaths have been reported in Buryatia. Fatal bear attacks on people have also been recorded in Altai, Kamchatka and the Khabarovsk Region.
Forest fires in the Krasnoyarsk Region and a poor pine nut harvest were among the reasons for the large number of bears coming into contact with people. The latest case was reported on September 23, when a bear attacked a guard at a truck parking lot in northern Krasnoyarsk Region.
Overall, TASS estimates that bears have approached populated areas in 41 Russian regions in 2026. The situation has been particularly difficult in Eastern Siberia. Bears have approached schools and military units and tried to enter private homes in the north of the region. Bears have also been spotted in popular tourist recreation areas in Krasnoyarsk, including the Gremyachaya Griva eco-park, near the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park and in an upscale cottage community in the Udachny neighborhood.
A heightened-alert regime has been introduced throughout the Irkutsk Region, while a curfew is in effect in Baikalsk. A heightened-alert regime has also been introduced in the city of Abaza in southern Khakassia, where, according to local authorities, bears have placed the city under "de facto siege." Regional authorities plan to extend the regime to the entire republic.
