Russian envoy slams Western attempts to block stabilization efforts in Syria

According to Alexander Lavrentyev, the UN rapporteur on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights called for an immediate lifting of all restrictions on Syria after her trip to the country

ASTANA, November 23. /TASS/. The West views Syria as a springboard for confrontation with Russia and has been doing all it can to prevent the situation in the Arab country from stabilizing, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said on Wednesday.

Summing up the 19th international Astana format meeting on Syria, he said, "Unfortunately, the Syrian dossier is very much politicized now, and the so-called collective West views this as a platform for confrontation with Russia and for dealing a blow to its prestige."

"This is why [Western countries] have been doing all they can to prevent Arab countries, among other nations, from taking specific steps toward stabilization and have been seeking to destabilize the situation in an attempt to reach its previous goal of overturning [Syria’s] incumbent legitimate government," Lavrentyev added.

According to Lavrentyev, the UN rapporteur on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights, Yelena Dovgan, called for an immediate lifting of all restrictions on Syria after her trip to the country. "We believe the international community should thoroughly analyze the results of that trip, take heed of them and take action," he emphasized.
