Russia, Jordan note urgency to implement projects for reconstruction of Syria — Lavrov

According to Sergey Lavrov, the need to implement Security Council Resolution 2254 was a key issue during talks with his Jordanian counterpart

AMMAN, November 3. /TASS/. Moscow and Amman advocate the urgent reconstruction of Syria in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday at a news conference following talks with his Jordanian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah Al-Safadi.

"We noted the need to step up international assistance to Damascus in order to ease the humanitarian situation and implement early recovery projects in accordance with the Security Council resolution, which was adopted in July of this year and which has so far been little taken into account by international supporters," Lavrov said.

According to the Russian top diplomat, the need to implement Security Council Resolution 2254 was a key issue during talks with his Jordanian counterpart. "We confirmed our common position, which is to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We reaffirmed our support for the legitimate right of Syrians to determine their own future, taking into account the interests of all population groups," he said.

"We stressed the importance of consolidating international efforts to solve the abovementioned problems to implement the UN Security Council resolution. We also noted the particular importance of various multilateral formats, in particular of the Astana format, in which Jordan participates as an observer. We appreciate the desire of our Jordanian friends to promote the tasks of facilitating the Syrian settlement within the League of Arab States, and we welcome this attitude," Lavrov added.
