Situation on Korean Peninsula escalates amid US-South Korea drills — diplomat

Maria Zakharova pointed out that Russia relies on the fact that a lasting peace in Northeast Asia can only be ensured by creating a system of multilateral and indivisible security with corresponding assurances provided to all the states concerned

MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. Washington and Seoul have launched the largest-ever military exercises on the Korean Peninsula, which is why the situation has escalated there, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Wednesday.

"The situation on the Korean Peninsula has escalated, and the reason is obvious - that is again Washington, which seeks to coerce Pyongyang into unilateral disarmament through sanctions, forceful pressure and provocations, and which engages the strategic capabilities and resources of allies in the Asia-Pacific region," she said. "Just the day before yesterday, on October 31, the Air Forces of the US and the Republic of Korea began unprecedentedly full-scale drills involving about 240 aircraft, which is in essence a rehearsal of a massive strike on DPRK territory (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, known as North Korea - TASS)," she said.

Zakharova pointed out that Russia relies on the fact that a lasting peace in Northeast Asia can only be ensured by creating a system of multilateral and indivisible security with corresponding assurances provided to all the states concerned.

"The Russian-Chinese diplomatic initiatives are aimed at achieving this goal," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
