PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, September 18. /TASS/. The Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka spewed ash to an altitude of up to 5.5 km, the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said.

"On September 18, the Shiveluch volcano produced an ash plume reaching an altitude of up to 5,500 meters, while the giant itself stands 3,282 meters high. Shiveluch has been assigned an ‘orange’ aviation hazard code. The ash plume is spreading eastward. However, if the wind direction changes, a small amount of ash could fall in the settlement of Ust-Kamchatsk and the village of Krutoberegovo in the Ust-Kamchatsk District," the statement said.

Yury Demyanchuk, head of the volcanological station in the settlement of Klyuchi, told TASS that the ash emissions were most likely associated with the growth of a new dome on the volcano.

Shiveluch is an active volcano in Kamchatka and is 60,000-70,000 years old. It consists of the Old Shiveluch volcano, an ancient caldera, and the active Young Shiveluch volcano. The volcano is located about 50 km from the settlement of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsk District and 450 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
