Local authorities have orally confirmed the detention of a Russian national, born 1988, for an attempt to illegally cross the border, an embassy spokesman said

ATHENS, January 24. /TASS/. Russia’s embassy in Greece is trying to find out the circumstance of the arrest of a Russian national on the island of Tinos but so far has received only oral explanations, an embassy spokesman told TASS on Sunday.

"The embassy is addressing this matter. We are in contact with Tinos’ coastal guards and police. Local authorities have orally confirmed the detention of a Russian national, born 1988, for an attempt to illegally cross the border. However no written notification has yet been received," he said.

Greece’s Proto Thema weekly reported on Sunday a 33-year-old Russian national had been detained on Tinos. The man illegally crossed into Greece onboard a sailing boat stolen at Turkey’s Cesme port. The man’s name was not disclosed. According to the newspaper, the boat ran ashore on January 22 near Tinos and is still there.
