Russia still has potential for discovery of giant hydrocarbon fields

Director General of the All-Russia Scientific Research Geological Oil Institute Pavel Melnikov said there are deep formations that have not yet been explored

MOSCOW, April 1. /TASS/. Russia still has prospects for discovering giant hydrocarbon fields, including on the Arctic shelf, Director General of the All-Russia Scientific Research Geological Oil Institute Pavel Melnikov said.

"I think that, on the one hand, this is true, and for many years we have observed that we are indeed discovering small and medium-sized fields. But there are regions we simply have not reached yet. There are deep formations that have not yet been explored. This is a matter of the distant or medium-term future. Large discoveries are possible there," he said.

Melnikov added that the country still has prospects and opportunities for discovering major fields. "There are sites that we are only just beginning to study. There are Arctic shelves, for example. There are large structures there - according to the results of our recent work, large uplifts are being identified. These are future giants," he added. Melnikov noted that it is still unclear how to develop them and that it is technologically difficult, but giant fields will still be discovered.
