Russia, Eritrea to study logistical opportunities of Massawa port — Lavrov

It is reported that the sides are creating a mechanism of consultations on trade, economy and investment through the intergovernmental line

MASSAWA /Eritrea/, January 27. /TASS/. Russia and Eritrea plan to examine in details the logistical potential of the Massawa port and transit via the city’s airport, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after talks with his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh.

"Among promising plans that still require a detailed study, I would like to mention the possibility of using the logistical potential of the Massawa port and the city’s airport. The airport of Massawa looks interesting from the point of view of its transit possibilities. Our partners are interested in the study, and we are ready to help them," he said.

The sides are creating a mechanism of consultations on trade, economy and investment through the intergovernmental line, Russia’s top diplomat said, adding that concurrently, the countries would encourage direct contacts between business communities interested in joint projects, particularly in the mining sector, energy, agriculture, information and communications technologies.

"Of course, at the same time the intergovernmental mechanism on economic issues will consider specific steps that should be made to secure our cooperation from illegitimate Western sanctions," Lavrov stressed.

Moreover, Russia and Eritrea will strengthen the regulatory basis of the relations and speed up the signing of a number of documents, particularly the memorandum on cultural cooperation that includes the agreement on mutual recognition of education, the minister added.
