BUENOS AIRES, November 7. /TASS/. The police have detained former Paraguayan President Santiago Pena in connection with the Ueno Bank case, in which the accounts of about 3 million customers were frozen, according to the newspaper ABC Color.
The police acted on a warrant issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, which filed charges of abuse of trust against Pena and suspects him of involvement in the embezzlement of funds through Ueno Bank.
Earlier in the day, Pena was impeached. Supporters of his removal from power accuse the ex-president of a conflict of interest due to alleged ties with Ueno Bank.
On November 3, the Central Bank imposed external administration on Ueno Bank, freezing its accounts. The population of Paraguay stands at 7 million people.
