Prosecutor’s Office issues warrant for arrest of former Paraguayan President Pena — paper

According to a report by Ultima Hora, the authority filed charges of abuse of trust and suspects Pena of embezzling funds through Ueno Bank

BUENOS AIRES, November 7. /TASS/. The Paraguayan Prosecutor’s Office has issued a warrant for the arrest of former President Santiago Pena in connection with the Ueno Bank case, where the accounts of about 3 million customers were frozen, according to the newspaper Ultima Hora.

The Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges of abuse of trust and suspects Pena of embezzling funds through Ueno Bank.

Earlier on Friday, Pena was impeached. Supporters of his removal from power accuse the ex-president of a conflict of interest due to alleged ties with Ueno Bank. Pena said he was resigning the day before, but the lack of a quorum prevented Congress from holding a vote to accept or reject the resignation.

Under the constitution, all ex-presidents become lifelong senators, except in cases of their impeachment.

On November 3, the Central Bank imposed external administration on Ueno Bank, freezing its accounts. The population of Paraguay stands at 7 million people.
