US holds its first execution since Christa Pike incident — news agency

Jamaal Howard was convicted of murdering a store employee in 2000 and was given a lethal injection

NEW YORK, October 8. /TASS/. The first death sentence in the US since the failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee was carried out in Texas, the Associated Press reported.

Accoridng to the news agency, Jamaal Howard was convicted of murdering a store employee in 2000. The 46-year-old was given a lethal injection. Nineteen minutes later, at 1:03 a.m. GMT on October 8, he was pronounced dead. This is the sixth execution in Texas this year.

On September 30 in Nashville, Tennessee, Christa Pike was given two doses of the lethal injection, but survived despite the executioners using seven needles. Her attorneys had warned that she suffers from thrombocytosis, a condition in which the injection of the drugs could lead to blood clots and additional suffering.

Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Following the failed execution, Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation and canceled another execution scheduled for 2026.
