Brazilian court to review Jair Bolsonaro’s 27-year sentence after election

The former head of state was accused of attempting a coup and staging an armed insurrection following his defeat in the 2022 election

RIO DE JANEIRO, October 6. /TASS/. Brazil’s Supreme Court will consider overturning the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro after the presidential election, Folha de S.Paulo reported.

According to the newspaper, Supreme Court Justice Nunes Marques, who also chairs the Superior Electoral Court, plans to refer the defense motion to the full 11-member court after the vote. The former head of state was sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges of attempting a coup and staging an armed insurrection following his defeat in the 2022 election. His prison term was later replaced with house arrest on health grounds.

The newspaper noted that the prospect of overturning Bolsonaro’s conviction emerged amid the electoral success of his son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who won the first round on October 4 with 47.03% of the vote. The runoff between Flavio Bolsonaro and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who received 45.16%, will take place on October 25. Brazilian analysts and media outlets now consider Flavio Bolsonaro the favorite in the runoff.
