At a joint news conference with French and Ukrainian Presidents, Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Zelensky, in Paris on Wednesday, Scholz stressed that the current situation in Ukraine and its aftermath would "play a major role" at the upcoming EU summit. He stressed that Zelensky’s personal participation in the year’s first meeting of the EU heads of state and government is "a strong signal."

"I am going to Brussels with a very clear statement that Ukraine is part of the European family," the German chancellor said, recalling that Ukraine and Moldova were granted the status of candidates for EU membership in June 2022.

A two-day EU summit opens in Brussels on Thursday. It will focus on the conflict in Ukraine. According to a high-ranking EU representative, the European leaders will discuss assistance to Ukraine, including possible supplies of fighter jets.
