MOSCOW, February 14. /TASS/. Russian Federal Customs Service officers detained a US citizen at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport for carrying cannabis sweets in his luggage, according to a statement from the agency's press service.
"Vnukovo customs officers detained a 28-year-old US citizen on February 7 for transporting cannabidiol gummies in his luggage," the report states.
The man had arrived from Istanbul, and during customs control, a sniffer dog named Eureka showed interest in one of his suitcases. Upon inspection, officers discovered two plastic jars and one ZIP pack containing the gummies. "A chemical analysis revealed the presence of narcotic substances from the cannabinoid group," the customs service reported.
The man explained that a doctor in the US had prescribed the gummies for his trip.
A criminal case for smuggling narcotic drugs in a significant amount has been initiated against him. The charges carry a penalty of imprisonment for five to ten years, along with a fine of up to 1 million rubles (approximately $11,000). The suspect has been taken into custody.
