Russian cosmonauts begin spacewalk to prepare ERA manipulator for operation

Oleg Artemyev will conduct the fourth spacewalk in his career

ISS, April 18. /TASS/. Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev who is also a TASS special reporter aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and Denis Matveyev opened the hatches of the Poisk module and embarked on their first spacewalk under the current expedition, Roscosmos said in a live broadcast on its website on Monday.

During their spacewalk, the cosmonauts will prepare the European Robotic Arm (ERA) for operation.

The Russian crew members will need to secure the exit hatch cover and install a protection ring. Matveyev will be the first to embark on the spacewalk to be followed by Artemyev.

The Russian cosmonauts’ extravehicular activity is expected to last 6 hours and 38 minutes. Artemyev who will conduct the fourth spacewalk in his career as a cosmonaut will operate in Orlan-ISS spacesuit No. 5 with red stripes while Matveyev will conduct extravehicular activity for the first time, wearing the spacesuit with blue stripes.

The cosmonauts will carry out all their works on the external side of Russia’s Nauka multi-purpose laboratory module.

On November 17, 2021, Russia’s world-renowned TASS news agency and the State Space Corporation Roscosmos signed a memorandum of cooperation, under which a TASS news office was established aboard the ISS. Presently, cosmonaut Artemyev is heading the outer space-based branch. Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin was the first TASS special reporter in space. His flight lasted 12 days.
