MELITOPOL, February 7. /TASS/. The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is undergoing routine maintenance and repairs to ensure that all systems remain operational, plant spokeswoman Yevgenia Yashina has told TASS.
"In accordance with technological safety protocols for the Zaporozhye NPP and in line with the schedule, crucial systems of the ZNPP undergo technical maintenance, tests and safety checks to confirm their operability and compliance with safety requirements," she said.
The spokeswoman went on to say that all necessary repairs are being held "on schedule."
In this way, "the nuclear power plant’s equipment is maintained in a high degree of preparedness for launch." The plant’s highly qualified personnel are maintaining operational safety, she added.
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said following a meeting with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev that his organization will continue its support to the ZNPP personnel in order to ensure stable and safe functioning of the nuclear site. At the same time, he underscored that the number of attacks on ZNPP is growing, and the security situation remains tense.
The Zaporozhye NPP, located in Energodar, has six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW. It is Europe’s largest nuclear power generating facility. At the end of February 2022, the facility was taken over by Russian forces. Since then, Ukrainian army units have periodically shelled both residential areas in Energodar and the plant itself using drones, heavy artillery and multiple rocket launchers. All six units of the plant are in cold shutdown, they are not generating electricity. The plant has the required personnel to ensure safe operation, the equipment is maintained in accordance with all necessary regulations under strict control of radiation and nuclear safety standards and under the supervision of IAEA experts.
