US experiencing societal split of values that could spark country’s collapse — Medvedev

The official cited the US establishment's current hostile attitude towards former President Donald Trump, who is attempting to return to the White House in this year’s election

MOSCOW, February 22. /TASS/. The United States is experiencing a deep societal and even civilizational split over fundamental values that could result in the collapse of the country, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday in an interview with Russian media, including TASS.

"A division of values, I should say, even a civilizational split, has set in between different parts of America," he said. "It is not about the contradictions in their ideology so much as it is about them not listening to each other, or even openly hating each other."

As an example, Medvedev cited the US establishment's current hostile attitude towards former President Donald Trump, who is attempting to return to the White House in this year’s election.

"They hate him more than all of us put together because they see him as a threat," he said. "Their opponents, the conservatives, on the contrary, believe that Washington's current course of rabid globalization will drive America to a dead end."

Medvedev said that about 20-25 years ago, the difference between the liberals and conservatives in the United States - loosely represented by the Democratic and Republican parties - was not all that significant.

"They used to joke about it saying ‘They are the same… they hold the same stance except for on specific issues, which they use [against each other to win] their election campaigns.’ This is not the case nowadays," he continued.

"It happened because of the inept course assumed by the US authorities following the collapse of the Soviet Union," Medvedev added.
