Presidential election campaign not started yet, Kremlin spokesman

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his administration are busy with current affairs, and the campaign for the election of the president has not yet begun, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, noting that Putin has not yet made any statements regarding his participation in the 2024 election.

"It's still early, the campaign hasn't started yet. The Kremlin has a lot of current affairs, the president has a very busy schedule and a busy agenda," the spokesman said when asked if the presidential administration was already conducting pre-election work.

"The president has not made any statements in this regard, for now work continues within the framework of the president's routine work schedule," Peskov said when asked if Putin had decided to run in the 2024 presidential election. The Kremlin spokesman also did not comment on remarks from the former Prime Minister and former Chairman of the Audit Chamber Sergey Stepashin that the president should run for another presidential term.

Peskov specified that the Kremlin was aware of the work launched by the Central Election Commission (CEC) to prepare for the 2024 presidential election. "This is a working process, the CEC is performing its functions," he said.

Russia’s Central Election Commission, along with addressing day-to-day tasks, is already laying the necessary foundation for the 2024 presidential election campaign, the head of the CEC, Ella Pamfilova, said on Friday.

"Naturally, we are preparing. Can it be otherwise? Time flies by unnoticed. Everything that can be prepared now - the technical, digital, methodological, organizational and personnel resources - is being prepared. We are implementing this with a view to conducting the presidential campaign. We are perfectly aware what presidential elections will imply in the current conditions," Pamfilova told the media.

She stressed that at the moment, one of the most important strategic tasks of the CEC was consistent efforts to increase voters' confidence in the elections and the electoral system itself.
