More than 100 ice-class mercantile ships to be created for Northern Sea Route

The work is underway to develop the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route, Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and Arctic Alexey Chekunkov noted

MOSCOW, October 15. /TASS/. More than 100 ice-class commercial fleet vessels will be built for the Northern Sea Route, Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and Arctic Alexey Chekunkov said.

"To the eight nuclear-powered icebreakers that we already have, which is a unique fleet on a global scale, another four will be added, and an ice-class commercial fleet totaling more than 100 vessels will be created," the minister said.

The work is underway to develop the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route, Chekunkov noted.

"The infrastructure is primarily for logistics, to ensure that the products from these production facilities can be delivered to global markets, and to make their construction possible. The key infrastructure project is the development of the Northern Sea Route, but it also includes the development of railways, including the Northern Latitudinal Railway, the development of inland waterways, the development of our ports, the satellite constellation development, emergency and rescue fleet infrastructure, and the expansion of the fleet itself," he added.
