Kazakhstan approves site for nuclear power plant construction

The referendum on construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country was held in Kazakhstan last year

ASTANA, February 25. /TASS/. The Zhambyl District of the Almaty Region in Kazakhstan is formally approved as the location for the first nuclear power plant in the country, according to the government decree signed by Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov and released on Tuesday.

"The decision on selecting the site for the nuclear facility - the Zhambyl District of the Almaty Region," the decree indicates. The document comes into force upon its publication.

The referendum on construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country was held in Kazakhstan last year. The majority of voters supported the construction of the plant.

The nuclear power plant is planned to be built with the involvement of a vendor from Russia, China, South Korea, or France. Authorities also are considering an option of a consortium for the plant project.
