Russian flag hoisted on nuclear-powered icebreaker Yakutia in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, December 28. /TASS/. A special ceremony of hoisting the Russian flag on the third serial universal nuclear-powered icebreaker of Project 22220 Yakutia has taken place at the Baltic Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation JSC) in St. Petersburg.

The universal nuclear-powered icebreaker Yakutia is a fourth vessel (third serially built) of Project 22220, under construction at the Baltic Shipyard for the Rosatom State Corporation. The keel-laying ceremony for the icebreaker, developed at the Iceberg Central Design Bureau, took place on May 26, 2020 (construction number 05709). It was launched on November 22, 2022. The vessel is equipped with a twin-reactor nuclear power plant RITM-200. The thermal capacity of each reactor is 175 MW. The reactor’s estimated service life is 40 years. The shaft power of the Project 22220 icebreaker is 60 MW.

Since 2016, three new-generation nuclear-powered ships - The Arktika, The Sibir and The Ural - have been launched from the slipways of the Baltic Shipyard for operation on the Northern Sea Route. In November, the icebreaker Chukotka was launched. The Leningrad and Stalingrad nuclear-powered ships will be next in this series.
