Turkey discusses second nuclear power plant, gas trade hub with Russia — minister

The minister pointed out that Turkey needs to have 20 Gigawatts of power generation in 30 years

ANKARA, March 8. /TASS/. Turkey would like to use Russia’s experience during the construction of the second nuclear power plant in the Sinop Province, and continues discussing the gas trading hub in Istanbul with Gazprom, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said.

"There are two interested countries in regards to the construction of the nuclear power plant in Sinop: Russia and South Korea. And, of course, in regards to Sinop, we pay attention to Russia and Rosatom. We already have a serious working experience on the Akkuyu NPP site, so we want to bring it to Sinop, as well. Our negotiations continue with both sides," the Minister during the Istanbul Energy and Climate Forum, according to the Takvim newspaper.

In regards to the third nuclear power plant in northwestern Turkey in the Kirklareli Province, Bayraktar said that the negotiations are underway "mainly with China and have reached a serious stage."

The minister pointed out that Turkey needs to have 20 Gigawatts of power generation in 30 years.

"The work at the Akkuyu power plant proceeds intensively. We want to begin producing the first power this year. At the same time, there is an issue of direct and indirect sanctions; we are trying to resolve it in a way that will not affect the actual work. We expect to commission all four Akkuyu reactors by 2028, and to cover 10% of Turkey’s total power demand with this power plant," Bayraktar underlined.
