France not depending on uranium supplies from specific countries — EDF

According to the statement, the company diversifies geographical sources and suppliers as much as possible to ensure reliable fuel supplies for nuclear power plants

PARIS, July 31. /TASS/. The French energy industry continues receiving uranium from other countries and is confident in stable fuel supplies for its nuclear power plants, despite the situation in Niger, EDF energy company told TASS.

"EDF diversifies geographical sources and suppliers as much as possible to ensure reliable fuel supplies for nuclear power plants. It means from the practical standpoint that we do not depend on any one facility, company or country in ensuring reliability of supplies," the company said.

EDF noted that it annually purchases about seven thousand metric tons of Uranium and all the related services of its processing, including NPP fuel making. According to the company, it stands at 10% of the global demand. EDF refused to disclose details of its diversification strategy in response to a request to clarify, to what extent the French energy sector will be affected by the ban on Niger’s uranium export introduced by rebels in the country.
