Sanya to become "waste-free city" by 2025

The implementation of the plan involves a low-carbon transformation of the city, as well as solving the problem of its solid waste pollution, authorities said in a statement

SANYA /China/, Jan. 8. /TASS/. Sanya city authorities in the southern Chinese province of Hainan have unveiled a plan to transform the resort into a "waste-free city" during the 14th five-year period (2021-2025). According to a document on the official website of the city government, the main goal of the plan is to create an integrated system of solid waste management and promote green development of the resort.

The implementation of the plan involves a low-carbon transformation of the city, as well as addressing its solid waste pollution, authorities said in a statement. As noted, measures to promote "green" development include a comprehensive cleanup of the city from plastic pollution, promotion of the "zero waste" concept in the tourism industry and hotel industry, and construction of eco-industrial parks with a closed-cycle economy.

According to Yang Xin, deputy head of the city's environmental protection department, whose words are cited in the document, the plan involves five key tasks: protecting nature and promoting a "green" lifestyle for local residents, taking measures to combat plastic pollution, creating a clean environment in rural areas, and protecting and preventing sea pollution. By 2025, he said, a comprehensive "waste-free city" management system will be formed, the "zero waste" concept in the tourism industry will be completed, an effective recycling system for tropical agriculture will be developed, a pollution monitoring system both on land and at sea will be improved, and a strict solid waste control system will be established which will significantly reduce the risks of environmental hazards.

Hainan pays special attention to environmental protection and pollution control. The island's four major population centers Haikou, Sanya, Sansha and Danzhou have introduced compulsory sorting of household waste in October 2020.

Hainan has banned single-use shopping bags, garbage bags, and plastic cutlery in December 2020. By the end of 2025, the province will completely ban the production, sale and use of all plastic products that cannot be recycled.
