MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. The current situation in Afghanistan looks encouraging, but a number of risks remain, CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov said during a press conference.
"The situation in Afghanistan is stabilizing. This is, of course, very encouraging. But still, the risks related to terrorist organizations and drug trafficking persist," he said.
In this regard, the CSTO Secretary General pointed out the program on strengthening the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, which will take 5 years to implement. At the same time, he noted that, if something does not work out during this time span, the Collective Security Council is entitled to prolong the implementation of this program.
Answering the question whether the organization holds negotiations with Uzbekistan, which also has a border with Afghanistan, he noted: "As for Uzbekistan, we hold no negotiations with the colleagues."
"The length of their border [with Afghanistan] is insignificant - only about 140 km. Back in the day, Uzbekistan set up the so-called barrier on that stretch. This is a very thoroughly protected border. In terms of equipment and in terms of security, it could be compared only to the 37th parallel between North and South Korea," he added.
