Avangard is a strategic missile defense complex with an ICBM equipped with a gliding winged warhead

MOSCOW, February 29. /TASS/. Avangard hypersonic warheads and Peresvet systems are on combat duty, President Vladimir Putin said in his address to the Federal Assembly.

"Hypersonic warheads of intercontinental range Avangard and laser systems Peresvet are on combat duty," he stated.

Avangard is a strategic missile defense complex with an ICBM equipped with a gliding winged warhead. The warhead was developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya (in Reutov, Moscow Region) and has been tested since 2004. It is capable of flying in the dense layers of the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds of up to Mach 27 (about 32,000 km/h), changing course and altitude and overcoming any missile defense. The system was first mentioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2018.

The Peresvet laser system is Russia’s first combat laser system based on new physical principles. Putin declared its creation in his address to the Federal Assembly on March 1, 2018. Detailed information about the system is classified.
