UK to allocate $22.5 mln to Ukraine for Chernobyl NPP repairs

The UK Cabinet said that the repairs are also necessary to remove corrosion that "risks undermining decades of international investment"

LONDON, October 15. /TASS/. The United Kingdom will allocate 17 million GBP ($22.5 million) in new support for repairs to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the UK Cabinet said in a press release.

"The support will fund crucial repairs to restore the structure’s confinement and ventilation functions and protect its intended lifespan," it said. "Without repairs, corrosion risks undermining decades of international investment and creating longer-term environmental and safety risks."

In 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the night of February 14. IAEA staff were informed that a strike drone had crashed into the shelter of the fourth power unit at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was noted that there were no signs of damage to the inner shell of the protective structure above the plant, and that radiation levels both inside and outside the structure remained normal and stable. Commenting on the incident at the plant, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Ukraine’s accusations that a Russian drone allegedly hit the plant and damaged the protective sarcophagus a fraud.
