Establishing US military base in Poland to take years, NATO supreme allied commander says

According to Alexus Grynkewich, the timeline will depend on how long it takes to build the necessary infrastructure

BRUSSELS, October 12. /TASS/. NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich said establishing a permanent US military base in Poland would take years because the necessary infrastructure must be built first.

In an interview with Polish TV channel TVP World, Grynkewich said the timeline would depend on how long it took to build the necessary infrastructure.

Grynkewich noted that a permanent US military presence would also involve relocating service members’ families, requiring the construction of schools, hospitals, and other essential facilities.

In late September, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Warsaw wanted to host up to 10,000 US troops at the proposed permanent military base. He noted that Poland already has a permanent US missile defense facility on its territory and confirmed that a second base is under discussion. Sikorski added that approximately 7,000 US service members are currently stationed in Poland on a rotational basis.

On June 3, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz submitted a formal proposal to establish a permanent US military base in Poland to Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. In early September, a US delegation visited Poland and inspected potential sites for the facility. On September 17, US President Donald Trump said there had been "great progress" in talks on the issue.
