Russia cautions NATO, EU against attempts to isolate Kaliningrad Region — diplomat

Alexander Grushko refrained from providing an analysis of statements from Estonian officials, especially those responsible for defense

MOSCOW, October 15. /TASS/. NATO and the European Union know full well what will happen if they try to isolate Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told reporters on Thursday.

"Our position is well known, and corresponding signals have been communicated to both NATO and the EU, and they are aware of consequences that any attempts to isolate the Kaliningrad Region or disrupt essential supplies to it may entail," the diplomat noted.

Grushko refused to provide an analysis of statements from Estonian officials, especially those responsible for defense. "They have already made a number of statements that it is hard to comment on in political terms," he noted.

Earlier, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced plans to initiate the decommissioning of a natural gas pipeline passing through the republic that serves as a backup transit route to Russia's Baltic exclave.

Russian officials have repeatedly stressed that any attempts to isolate the region may trigger a major response.
