WASHINGTON, July 18. /TASS/. Russian Embassy in the US continues pressing the authorities for consular access to the Russian citizen Maria Butina, who was detained on charges of unregistered activities as an agent in the interests of Russia in the US.
"We haven’t received this opportunity so far," a spokesperson for the Embassy said on Tuesday. "We’ll continue defending the legitimate rights of the Russian citizen Maria Butina with all the existing legal instruments."
At 1:30 pm on July 18, the federal court in the District of Columbia holds a session on the case, he said, adding: "The documents have been classified. A highly qualified lawyer will represent the Russian citizen’s interests in the courtroom."
The US Department of Justice said on Monday Maria Butina was detained in Washington on charges of unregistered activity in the US as a foreign agent pursuing Russia’s interests. Her lawyer said Butina was not an agent of the Russian Federation.
