Romania has no plans to send troops to Ukraine — president

"Troops cannot be sent to Ukraine under NATO’s mandate because Ukraine is not a NATO ally," Klaus Iohannis said

BUCHAREST, March 12. /TASS/. Romania will continue supporting Ukraine as it used to but will not send its troops, Romanian President Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said.

"Troops cannot be sent to Ukraine under NATO’s mandate because Ukraine is not a NATO ally," he said at a joint news conference with his Montenegrin counterpart, Jakov Milatovic when asked whether such a scenario was possible. "But in general, if Ukraine has bilateral agreements with a certain state in any sphere, these issues are a matter of bilateral relations."

"Romania will not send soldiers to Ukraine," Iohannis stressed. "We are supporting Ukraine in a variety of ways and will continue doing this as he have done until now."

After a conference on Ukraine in Paris on February 26, Macron said that the participants had considered sending ground troops to Ukraine. Although no consensus was reached on this topic, he left the door open to such a scenario in the future. After the conference, most of the participating counties stated that they have no plans to send troops to Ukraine to fight against Russia. French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said on the following day that the presence of Western troops in Ukraine could be needed to render certain types of assistance, for instance, in mine clearance operations and training Ukrainian soldiers, but such a presence would not extend their direct participation in the conflict.
