MOSCOW, November 4. /TASS/. Russia will never give the green light to restrictions on the use of veto power in the UN Security Council, as this right is not a privilege but a burden of special responsibility, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of International Organizations Kirill Logvinov said in an interview with TASS.
"We will never give the green light to proposals aimed at restricting the use of the veto, regardless of the justification offered. This right is not a privilege but a burden of special responsibility, a tool that encourages the search for lasting and fair compromises. The decline in the UN Security Council’s effectiveness is rooted not in the use of the veto but in the policies of the Western minority, which continues its attempts to use this body exclusively to advance its own agenda," he said.
As for the possible role of the next UN secretary-general in the reform process, Logvinov continued, "this issue does not fall within the scope of their mandate." "As I have already noted, this matter is the prerogative of UN member states," he emphasized.
