Embassy reports rights of Russians detained in Tunisia not violated

Currently, the Russian nationals are being kept in the Mornaguia prison located 14 km away from the capital

TUNIS, December 17. /TASS/. The rights of 11 Russian citizens detained in Tunis, Tunisia have not been violated, the Russian embassy in Tunisia told TASS.

"The Russians are in good health, and there have been no complaints with regard to the detention conditions or any potential display of discrimination by the penitentiary authorities," the embassy said, adding that this information was confirmed during the vice consul’s meeting with the detainees.

Currently, the Russian nationals are being kept in the Mornaguia prison located 14 km away from the capital. An investigation is underway. The first court hearing is expected to take place behind closed doors shortly.

A group of 11 Russians was detained in Tunis in mid-November. They travelled to the settlement of Haydrah near the border with Algeria to conduct research. This area is strictly controlled by the local security forces, owing to the sensitive infrastructure objects located there, including facilities belonging to the Defense Ministry. Apart from that, a tense situation remains in the border areas due to the presence of terrorist cells there.
