Ukraine sees surge in daily COVID-19 case tally

The infections neared 8,000, according to the health minister

KIEV, January 14. /TASS/. Ukraine’s doctors registered nearly 8,000 new coronavirus cases in the past day, some 1,516 more than a day earlier, when the daily case tally hit 6,409, Health Minister Maxim Stepanov said on Thursday.

"In the past day, 7,925 new COVID-19 cases were recorded and 2,229 patients were rushed to hospitals," Stepanov wrote on his Facebook page.

Some 233 children and 345 medical workers contracted the coronavirus. Over the past day, 10,192 patients recovered and 162 others died.

Most new cases were registered in Kiev (794), the Donetsk Region (588), the Zaporozhye Region (554), the Lvov Region (482) and the Nikolayev Region (460). As many as 54,265 COVID-19 tests were carried out in the past day.

Since the start of the pandemic, Ukraine has confirmed 1,138,764 COVID-19 cases, while 837,063 patients have recovered and 20,376 others have died.

Ukraine reported its first coronavirus case on March 3. Quarantine restrictions were introduced in the country on March 17. A state of emergency has recently been extended to February 28, 2021. A strict lockdown is in effect on January 8-25 in accordance with the government’s decision.

On December 30, Ukrainian authorities announced the country’s first contract for the purchase of over 1.9 mln doses of a coronavirus vaccine produced by China’s Sinovac Biotech company. The country is expected to receive the first 700,000 doses of the vaccine as early as in February. Ukraine also expects vaccine supplies under the COVAX platform.
