TASHKENT, September 07, /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi is the sole candidate for hosting the European Wrestling Championship in 2017, the Russian Wrestling Federation said on its official website on Sunday.

“DE facto, the 2014 Olympic capital has won the right to host the European championship in 2017,” the federation said.

Russia filed its application at a United World Wrestling (UWW) congress in Tashkent on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Georgy Bryusov, the first vice-president of the Russian Wrestling Federation, told ITAR-TASS that Sochi’s application had been agreed with the Russian ministry of sport and the Russian Olympic Committee.

“Its official presentations will take place at the first European Games in June 2015 in Baku. It looks like Sochi’s bid for the European Championship in 2017, like Paris’ bid for the World Championship will be unrivalled,” he said.

Sochi can boast hosting the latest Olympic Winter Games in February-March 2014. In October, it will host 2014 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix motor race.
