Republican Party’s defeat in US Congress election unlikely to impact Russia’s interests

Dmitry Medvedev noted that Russia is focused on the Ukrainian conflict and sanctions

MOSCOW, November 5. /TASS/. The crushing defeat of US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the recent midterm elections to the US Congress is unlikely to have a significant impact on Russia’s interests, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

"Donald Trump was crushed in the battle for the Congress. What impact it will have on our interests? I think it won’t have a significant impact as of yet," Medvedev wrote on his Max channel.

"We are primarily interested in two issues: the Ukrainian conflict and the sanctions," he noted, adding that Kiev does not always follow Washington’s lead and the consequences of the sanctions could be more painful for the United States itself.

The United States held its midterm elections on November 3. Voters elected 35 of the 100 members of the Senate and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. Gubernatorial elections were also held in 36 states.

According to the latest estimates by US media outlets, Democrats are poised to secure majorities in both houses of the new Congress. Republicans currently control both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
