Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian believes that one of the conditions for holding a meeting between him and US leader Donald Trump should be a demonstration by Washington of its lack of intention to force a change of power in the Islamic Republic, according to CBS.

"The first thing that needs to happen is that the distrust created by this war has to be overcome. The United States needs to show that it does not intend to overthrow our government or our administration," Pezeshkian said in response to a question about the possibility of a meeting with Trump.

The US leader had previously suggested such contacts on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, but no such meetings were announced.

"Put yourself in our position. Imagine someone came and martyred your supreme leader. And then, not abide by everything you had agreed upon. What would be your reaction? It's not something that can be resolved that simply," Pezeshkian added.

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the United States resumed large·scale strikes against Iran, accusing it of violating the agreements on the Strait of Hormuz. Before the conflict began, about a quarter of the world’s oil trade and about 20% of liquefied natural gas were transported through it.
