Sevmash to build three Borey-A-class strategic submarines in coming years

The shipyard is also building five Yasen-M-class strategic nuclear submarines with guided missiles

MOSCOW, December 21. /TASS/. Sevmash Shipyard will build three Borey-A-class strategic nuclear submarines with ballistic missiles (SSBN) in the coming years, shipyard CEO Mikhail Budnichenko told TASS.

"In the coming years, another three strategic submarines of Borey-A class have to be floated and handed over to the Navy in the framework of the state arms program," he said.

The shipyard is also building five Yasen-M-class strategic nuclear submarines with guided missiles (SSGN). The Arkhangelsk is at the final construction stage, he said.

"The tasks of the arms procurement order have been fulfilled. Two groups of Yasen-M and Borey-A class nuclear submarines are being built in the slipways," Budnichenko said adding the Knyaz Pozharsky SSBN will be floated as scheduled.

"The Knyaz Pozharsky nuclear submarine is in the slipway construction period. It will be completed according to the schedule approved by the Russian Defense Ministry," he said.

The Knyaz Pozharsky is the fifth SSBN of upgraded Borey-A-class project 955A. She was laid on December 23, 2016 and will be armed with 16 Bulava ballistic missiles and six torpedo launchers.

Sevmash, which built the Leninsky Komsomol K-3 first Soviet nuclear submarine in 1958, has delivered 12 fourth-generation nuclear submarines to the Navy in the past ten years, Budnichenko said.

The Emperor Alexander III and the Krasnoyarsk latest submarines of the fourth generation are armed with modern weapons and equipment.

"The Krasnoyarsk has completely new architectural specifics. The element base of the radio-electronic arms has been upgraded, new materials and equipment have been used," he said.

The Emperor Alexander III is the third serial submarine of Borey-A class and is armed with Bulava missiles and modern torpedo weapons, as well as navigational, radio-technical and acoustic means. The submarine is highly maneuverable, Budnichenko said.

Sevmash Shipyard has built 140 nuclear submarines of four generations in 65 years of its existence.
