China-US relations not smooth, but competition not an option — Xi Jinping

The Chinese leader said that Beijing and Washington will be capable of rising above their differences as long as they respect each other, strive for peace and pursue win-win cooperation

BEIJING, November 16. /TASS/. China-US relations are not smooth sailing, but the competition between Beijing and Washington will not solve bilateral and global issues, Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Joe Biden at their meeting in California on the sidelines of the APEC summit.

"Over the past 50 years, China-US relations have never been smooth sailing as they have always faced problems of one kind or another. Yet they have kept moving forward amid twists and turns," China Central Television said citing XI Jinping.

"The competition between major powers is not in keeping with the spirit of our times and will not help resolve bilateral and global challenges that both China and the United States are facing," he said.

The Chinese leader said that Beijing and Washington will be capable of rising above their differences as long as they respect each other, strive for peace and pursue win-win cooperation. He spoke with confidence about the successful future of China-US relations despite the differences in their cultures and the socio-economic growth.

"Today I am looking forward to having an in-depth exchange of views with you regarding China-US relations and major strategic issues in a comprehensive and focused manner, as well as other crucial issues related to peace and global development, in order to achieve another consensus," Xi added.

The two leaders are holding talks at Filoli Estate, 40 kilometers south of San Francisco.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden have held their seventh talks since January 2021, when Biden took office. It is their second face-to-face meeting since they last met on the Indonesian island of Bali in November 2022. Xi Jinping is paying his first visit to the United States in six years. During the visit, he is scheduled to attend the APEC summit.
