Moldova says it can’t support sanctions on Russia due to weak economy

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier said some actions and statements of official Chisinau cast doubt on the real commitment of the country's leadership to the neutral status of the republic

CHISINAU, June 22. /TASS/. Moldova can’t fully join the sanctions on Russia, even as it aspires to be an EU member, because it has a weak economy, Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu said on Moldova One television on Wednesday.

"Some sanctions are applied by Moldova, mainly in the financial and banking sector," he said. "At this stage, the level of stability of the Republic of Moldova and its ability to deal with challenges in various areas don’t allow joining the large package of the EU restrictive measures."

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova earlier said some actions and statements of official Chisinau cast doubt on the real commitment of the country's leadership to the neutral status of the republic, pragmatic and mutually beneficial partnership with Russia. She spoke about restrictions on the re-export of Russian goods and sanctions against Russian media.
