Kim Jong-un extends greetings to Queen Elizabeth II on her official birthday

"I am sending congratulations to You and Your people on the official birthday of Your Majesty," the country’s Foreign Ministry quoted Kim Jong-un as saying

TOKYO, June 2. /TASS/. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a congratulatory letter to Queen Elizabeth II of Britain on Thursday on her official birthday, says a statement on the country’s Foreign Ministry website.

"I am sending congratulations to You and Your people on the official birthday of Your Majesty," the ministry quoted Kim Jong-un as saying.

The tradition to celebrate two birthdays of the sovereign, the actual and the official ones, dates back to King George II (1683-1760). Born in November he ordered in 1748 that his birthday be publicly celebrated in summer, when weather is better for outdoor ceremonies. Queen Elizabeth II, who was born on April 21, 1926 and crowned on June 2, 1953, has chosen June for official birthday celebrations.
