Israel notifies Russia ahead of Syria strikes — official

Israel has delivered airstrikes at dozens of Iranian targets in Syria

TEL AVIV, May 10. /TASS/. Israel informed Russia prior to delivering strikes at targets in Syria in retaliation for a missile attack on Israeli soil, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Jonathan Cornicus said on Thursday.

He said the Russian side had been notified about the attack via a de-conflicting mechanism that the two countries’ militaries have been maintaining since 2015.

Israel delivered airstrikes at dozens of Iranian Quds forces’ targets in Syria in the small hours of Thursday morning in response to a strike on its positions in the Golan Heights.

The targets included the Quds headquarters, military and logistics compounds, an Iranian military camp north of Damascus, Quds weapons depots at Damascus’ international airport, military and observation posts in the buffer zone, and an Iranian missile system that had been used to fire rockets at Israel.

All Israeli warplanes returned from the combat mission, the IDF said.

The Iranian Quds forces fired at least 20 missiles at Israel’s forward positions on the Golan Heights shortly after midnight on Thursday. Some of the missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Israel took control over the Golan Heights, which had belonged by Syria from 1944, after the Six-Day War in 1967. In 1981, Israel’s Knesset (parliament) passed a law on the Golan Heights unilaterally proclaiming Israel’s sovereignty over this territory. United Nations Security Council Resolution 497 of December 17, 1981 ruled that the annexation was null and void, having no international legal effect.
