Iranian top diplomat denies supplying arms to Russia

On Thursday, European Council President Charles Michel said that the EU Council "hastily" adopted sanctions against Iran for allegedly providing "military support to Russia"

TASS, October 20. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian held a telephone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, during which the Iranian diplomat denied supplying arms to Russia, he said on his Twitter page on Thursday.

"I reminded Mr. Borrell that Iran's political course is to oppose a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine," the Iranian top diplomat wrote, "Allegations that the Islamic Republic of Iran is supplying weapons to Russia for use in hostilities are unfounded. We [Iran] cooperate with Moscow in the military sphere, but we are not sending them drones and other weapons for use in the Ukrainian conflict."

On Thursday, European Council President Charles Michel said that the EU Council "hastily" adopted sanctions against Iran for allegedly providing "military support to Russia." The sanctions were imposed against five Iranian citizens and three organizations.

On Wednesday, Iran's permanent envoy to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, stressed that Iran has categorically denied allegations that it gave Russia drones for use in the Ukrainian conflict. Russia's first deputy permanent envoy to the UN Dmitry Polyansky also denied this information.

Earlier, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin had no information about the purchase or use of Iranian drones by Russia. He noted that domestic equipment with Russian names was used during the country’s special operation.
