Russian missile frigate calls at Saudi port in long-distance deployment

The Northern Fleet’s naval group departed from the naval base of Severomorsk for its deployment in distant waters in January this year

MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. The Russian missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov made a business call at the port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia in its long-distance deployment, the Northern Fleet’s press office reported on Wednesday.

"The Northern Fleet’s naval group consisting of the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov and the medium sea tanker Kama accomplishing long-distance deployment missions made a business call at the port of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," the press office said in a statement.

During its stay at the port, the ships will replenish their fuel, fresh water and food supplies, it said.

"A cultural program has been arranged for the crew. Previously, Russian naval ships made calls at ports of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia about ten years ago," the statement reads.

The Northern Fleet’s naval group departed from the naval base of Severomorsk for its deployment in distant waters in January this year. Over this period, it has participated in two international naval drills in the waters of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea and covered a total distance of about 21,000 nautical miles. The naval group crossed the equator twice, the press office said.
