BRATISLAVA, November 7. /TASS/. The results of Slovakia’s 2003 referendum on joining the European Union were falsified, Prime Minister Robert Fico said.
"When Slovakia joined the EU in 2004, there was great enthusiasm here. We held a referendum that, if it hadn’t been faked, wouldn’t have been successful. This needs to be said. On the one hand, there was enormous enthusiasm, but at the same time, the [gap in the votes when tallying the results] of this referendum on joining the EU, dear friends, was so insignificant that, in my opinion, some corrections were made so that they would be what they should be - so that Slovakia’s accession to this organization would be approved," he said on the Facebook (banned in Russia) page of his party Direction - Social Democracy.
According to Fico, the parties in power in Slovakia during the referendum and the political opposition, which he himself belonged to, supported the republic’s accession to the EU. If there had been no such unity, the prime minister said, "I guarantee that this referendum would not have been successful. I have always believed that the EU is a good project."
The turnout at the referendum amounted to 52%. The vast majority of the voters supported the republic’s accession to the EU.
